Remember The Yamato

I've blogged more than once about my fear that the U.S. surface combatant fleet may end up as a bunch of decimated targets from submarines, cruise missiles or aircraft. Why do I worry so much? Because the world has seen mighty surface combatants defeated at great cost in life and treasure before in similar circumstances, perhaps most recently and strikingly in the sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamato in waning days of World War II, which killed more than 3,000 Japanese sailors. I worry that U.S. Naval commanders may fall prey to the same kind of folly.
