Shirah at Unbossed,
points us to a report detailing the flaws in existing teacher's education programs, and suggesting a restructuring of the system to make teacher's certification a one year add on to an undergraduate liberal arts degree. It is right on target, and has data to back up its conclusions.
Back in 1973 when my mom graduated from UNC, it used to be that way. They structured it as a double major, effectively adding a fifth year. In my mom's case, she majored in nutrition and education, minoring in Spanish, which made her qualified to bilingually teach elementary school as well as junior/senior high home economics.
