Hand Deliver Your Colorado Ballot Today

You have until 7 p.m. to hand deliver ballots to to a drop off point today in Colorado. It is too late to mail a ballot, as it must be received, rather than merely postmarked today to be counted.

Unaffiliated voters don't have any issues before them in Denver, at least, and so didn't get ballots in this primary election, but can join a party today and vote in that party's primary.

The details are as follows (omissions from the quoted material are not noted):

Unaffiliated voters will not receive a ballot for the Primary Election. Colorado law allows unaffiliated registered voters to affiliate with a party as late as Election Day in order to vote for that party's candidates. However, voters who are already affiliated with a party and wish to withdraw or change that affiliation must have done so by the voter registration deadline, July 12.

For the 2010 Primary Election there will be 13 full-service Voter Service Centers. The following services will be available at all service centers:

* Drop off your voted ballot (5 locations have a drive-through)
* Obtain a replacement ballot if you lose or spoil your ballot
* Vote on an ADA-compliant touch-screen voting machine
* Affiliate with a party (if you are unaffiliated) and receive that party's
ballot
* Emergency registration

Parking around the Denver Elections Division at 200 14th Avenue (SW corner, 14th & Bannock) consists of nearby on-street metered parking, nearby pay lots and very limited half-hour visitor parking in the alley in back of the Division.

Turnout has been high this year (about 33% of ballots mailed have been voted), due to the use of mail in balloting and interesting top of the ticket races in both major parties. Results will be available here at 7 p.m. and include a large number of pre-counted ballots that were received before election day in the first results posting, that will likely predict the outcome in races that aren't extremely close.

Other trivia:

Active voter affiliated with the Democratic party outnumber active voters affiliated with the Republican party by just a hair less than 3-1,and outnumber active voters affiliated with the Libertarian party by a hair more than 100-1.

There were 206,375 ballots originally issued to active votes who are affiliated with the Democratic, Republican or Libertarian parties in Denver. Another 642 ballots were issued after the first wave during the election.

There were 16,612 ballots that were returned as undeliverable, and 1327 ballots that were returned to election officials but rejected for some reason as invalid.

There were 119,971 ballots outstanding that could be returned today in Denver as of the end of yesterday. Thousands or tens of thousands more ballots will probably be returned today. Denver has a tendency to have a particularly high share of ballots turned in on the last day. My guess based on the experiences of past elections would be that the number of ballots turned in today will be more than 7,000 and less than 23,000.
