Things You Can't Do In Boston

Fire waitresses in alphabetical order until someone admits to stealing. Agis v. Howard Johnson Co., 371 Mass. 140, 355 N.E.2d 315 (1976).

  1. Massachusetts is an at will state. I think the procedure of alphabetical firing would have been allowed had it been conducted, even with the procedure announced in advance, in private sessions, one day at a time. But then the manager would not have gotten the (fleeting) enjoyment from the public humiliation.

  2. Don't you think the shooting them in alpha order would have been the smarter move.

  3. "Dead people cannot sue."
