The stereotype of the early retiree is of an affluent professional leaving the work force at 45 to play golf, while the stereotypical late retiree works into his golden years because his pension isn't sufficient to pay his bills. But, on average, less skilled and educated people leave the work force earlier than people with more skills and education:
Some 65% of American men aged 62-74 with a professional degree are in the workforce, compared with 32% of men with only a high-school certificate. In the European Union the pattern is similar.
