This is just a brief update, with a single map of which side controls what territory in the Ukraine War, and two more maps and one chart for context.
About 40% of the territory currently controlled by Russia has been controlled by it since 2014. Russia has made few territorial gains since the early days of its February 2022 invasion when it seized and held about 10% of Ukraine's territory, mostly in four eastern provinces.
This can be compared to the map below (from here) which shows the percentage of people for whom Russian was their primary language in 2001:
