UK Catholics Only Half Nuts.

The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.

“We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision,” they say in The Gift of Scripture.

This isn't really news, but has rarely been said so clearly and so publicly. The statement is a natural response to strawman arguments from the strong secular movement in the U.K. But, it isn't obvious that it will stem the tide of secularism in Europe or the U.K. either. Once you commit to looking at the Scripture from a historical and rational perspective, you also open up the possibility that much or all of its metaphysical content is false. And, if you abandon the metaphysical content of the Scripture, you become a humanist who sees Jesus as a good man only, and cease to be a Christian (or, at least, you cease to be a Roman Catholic).
