In the last 40 years, just five HIV vaccines have made it to clinical trials. A previously most successful one was 31% effective and not promoted for general use because this was too low. The latest one is about 67% effective in monkeys and has been found to be safe in a study of 400 people - it now advances to a study of 2600 women at high risk of AIDS infections in South Africa.
