Abortion Bans Don't Work

Nicaragua bans all abortions by law, even when the mother's life is in danger. It doesn't work there, or elsewhere in Latin America.

Latin America has the world’s strictest laws on abortion. But that does not discourage it. Latin America also has the world’s highest abortion rates, averaging nearly one per woman over the course of her reproductive lifetime.

From the New York Times via the Family Law Prof Blog.

I've noted previously at this blog that abortion rates are actually lower in the Roe v. Wade governed United States, than they are in Mexico, where abortion is virtually entirely banned by law. The main difference is that in Mexico, far more women die in the process of obtaining an abortion.
