A CSPAN report via SCOTUS Blog reports that the Sonia Sotomayor U.S. Supreme Court nomination confirmation debate is beginning right about now and will be completed this week before the August recess of the U.S. Senate.
Fifty-two senators "have committed to support Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court. Twenty-seven Senators–all Republican–have said they will vote against her confirmation and 21 are undecided."
Cloture on a filibuster requiires sixty votes. But, it is likely that many who are undecided on the merits, and even some who oppose her nomination on the merits, will not vote in favor of a filibuster. Sotomayor replaces retiring Justice Souter.
