Jose Padilla, a U.S. citizen who was detained as an "enemy combatant" and then transferred to the criminal justice system once a bad legal precedent was established, convicted in 2007, and sentenced to 17 years in prison for his associations with terrorist groups, in a criminal trial. A split decision of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeal just
reversed that sentence on appeal as too lenient.
