While there is fairly good publicly available data on the felony offenses for which people are in prison, the parallel data on people who are in jail pursuant to misdemeanor convictions has been hard to find.
A new data set addresses that shortcoming.

Hum... I think that punishing folks for offences against order is required if we expect to preserve a relatively acceptable amount of order. So violent or not, I fully support throwing DUIs in jail. And property for that matter. For drugs... I guess it makes sense, gets the druggies a shower, delousing and two square.
In this post, I'm not advocating for less or more incarceration in jails. But you can't make good policy choices without good information, which has been unavailable until now.
